Choosing Riley excerpt

Riley St. Claire has always followed her own rules. When she discovers her current employer is not as law abiding as she thought, she has to leave town in a hurry or end up buried with the dead guy she discovered. What she doesn’t expect is to find herself being picked up by a passing trader from another world.

As the ruling King of Sarafin, Vox d’Rojah, was expected to produce a son who would be joined in marriage with the first born daughter of the King of Valdier. The problem was Vox had no intentions of having any sons, at least not in the near future. He was quite happy with the wide selection of females he had at his disposal. When he is captured by a ruthless Valdier royal and sold to a mining operation the last thing he expected to find with his bride mate.

Vox isn’t sure which would be easier: fighting another war with the Valdier or capturing and holding onto the human female who is unlike anything he has ever encountered before.

Now, Vox has to escape back to his world while fighting pirates, traders, and Riley!

The King of Sarafin has met his match with Ms. Riley St. Claire from Earth. Now, he just needs to figure out a way to let her know he has chosen her as his Queen and he has every intention of keeping her by his side forever.

Viper's Mate

Viper’s Defiant Mate: Sarafin Warriors Book 2

Prince Viper d’Rojah, a warrior from the Sarafin cat shifter species, is not happy when he is sent on a special mission by his older brother Vox, King of the Sarafin. The mission is to deliver important documents to the human authorities before kidnapping the sister and grandmother of Vox’s mate, Riley. He has handled tougher assignments in his sleep and just wants to get back to finding the traitors trying to kill him and his family!

Tina St. Claire was finally happy with her life until her big sister, Riley, suddenly disappeared. Even Grandma Pearl suspected that Riley’s ex-employer was hiding something. Determined to find Riley, Tina’s research unwittingly leads the danger to her and Grandma Pearl. The unexpected arrival of a strange man causes things to go from bad to worse when he gives her and Grandma Pearl a packet of material he claims is from Riley.

Riley had warned Viper that neither her sister nor Grandma Pearl would willingly come with him. Viper could care less whether the females wanted to come or not, he had never failed a mission and wasn’t about to start now.

Viper soon discovers this mission has turned into the most important one of his life when both he and his cat recognize that Tina is their mate. Now, he has to keep Tina and her gun toting Grandmother alive. The question is, who is going to save him when both women discover his plans to kidnap them?

  • when do we expect the next installment, Vipers defiant mate?
love all your books they just don’t release fast enough to suite me lol

    • The short answer is that I am not sure. I still have vacation brain LOL so I haven’t planned the order of my next books apart from a short story I am writing and Twin Dragons. Once I am back home and back into writing, I will update you as to the order of upcoming books. But you know of course that that plan can change because sometimes characters do not want to wait, LOL. Take care, Susan.

  • Ms Smith, you have a new fan. I have just read Choosing Riley and like Rayna above, can’t wait to read Viper’s story. I now have to read everything you’ve written (starting with Abducting Abby, as you suggest.). Choosing Riely was a wonderful romp – thank you so much for this – how did Riley put it? Ah yes – Science Fiction-Shifter-Romance Novel.

    • Thank you so much Mary for saying hello. Choosing Riley is one of those laugh out loud books and I love her – and her bag with everything! I hope you enjoy reading my other books lol. Please come and join us on my FB too – I’m there everyday and love chatting with my readers.

    • Tina has a bit drier humor than Riley, LOL. Poor Viper isn’t going to know what hit him! Besides the rock salt.

  • I don’t normally search authors websites and leave comments, but I just finished reading Choosing Riley, my first book by you, and I absolutely loved it. You are now one of top authors to read. I don’t think I have ever laughed so much while reading. I actually reads this in one sitting. Can’t wait for the next book in this series. In the meantime, I think I will be voraciously reading your other series! Keep up the great writing!

    • Thank you, Diana! This post is music to an author! Riley is one of those stories you either love or hate. LOL. She is very down to Earth and girly-girly in the best possible way.

  • Hi there, I’ve just finished Choosing Riley one word sums it up Brill
I had quite a few looks when I read it at my doctors as I kept laughing out loud as you just can’t help it. It was fun, feisty couldn’t put it down once I’d started it. can’t wait for Vipers Defiant Mate if its like choosing riley I’d better leave it at home next time. lol Lezley

    • Hi Lezley, Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Laughter is good for the world. LOL. Yes, Tina and Pearl will have their stories coming.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Choosing Riley”. It was just as good the second time around. I also re-read “A Dragonling’s Easter”, both stories kept me laughing. I look forward to reading “A Dragonling’s Haunted Hallowe’en”.

  • I absolutely loved this book and I am looking forward to the stories of Pearl and Tina. I love Riley, she made me laugh out loud several times.
I will also check out your other books, since this was the first book I read by you.

    • You’ll find all of my books have a definite thread of humor throughout them. If you enjoyed Riley, you’ll probably enjoy the others as well.

  • I LOVED Riley’s character! In fact the whole St. Claire family is tremendous. You could have them as leads in their own series. At least write write more of the Sarafin books before another about the Valdier Warriors. You have already covered their royal family. Now you are on secondary crew members. In the Sarafin series you have a leather clad grandma who is a master of foul curses, shoots rock salt w/ her shot gun and carries a taser in her waistband. Priceless!!! Please don’t keep us in suspense for too long waiting for Viper’s story. He has no idea what he is in for,,,, 🙂

    • Viper’s Mate is scheduled after the first of the year. I have Merrick’s Maiden, then Risteard’s Unwilling Empress, then Viper’s Mate (Viper and Tina) with a short story of Pearl and her Dragon Warrior. LOL. Not much longer, I promise!

  • I loved Choosing Riley i have never been so entertained by a book i laughed out loud so much i couldn’t believe it . its hard for a movie to make laugh let alone a book. I LOVE YOUR BOOKS! i have read most of them.

    • Thank you, Sherrie! That is what is so great about them, they all have a thread (or in Riley’s case the whole store of thread) of laughter in them. Tina and Viper’s story will be coming up two books from now!

        • I am currently working on Viper’s Defiant Mate: Sarafin Warriors Book 2. Look for an end of May/early June release. I’ll know more in the next couple of weeks.

  • I started with the dragonlord’s series, but when I read the part where Riley was on the communication device talking about the fight on their ship….I knew I had to find the her book. I devoured it. I have never read a book so fast or laughed so hard in my life. I just wanted to thank you for entertaining me.

    • LOL. Thank you, Melanie! 🙂 Viper’s story is coming up in March. Poor Viper has no idea what he is about to encounter with both Tina AND Pearl!

  • I listened to “Choosing Riley” at work. I laughed so much, my co-workers wanted to know what I was listening to. I loved it! I love the way you include charaters from other books.

  • thank godness the english language was so easy to learn for me, it gave me the chance to read your books 😀
I´ve read all the Dragon Lord and Lord of Kassis Books and they were all just amazing but reading this one, Choosing Riley, made me just fall in love with you as a writer lol … I´ve read the book 3 times now and still laugh as I had never read it before 🙂
Riley and Vox, I never laughed so hard reading a story, killing Jackets (OMG LOL), blowing up Asteroids, sassy all the way 😀
you are an amazing storyteller, lots of phantasie, lots of story, lots of laughs and love and lots of wanting more and more to read 😀
I love the depths of the Stories and Characters
please, please, please! never EVER stop writing books 😀
dont mind the pressure of your fans … lol … just write *giggles*
even if you write only one book a year in the future, as long as it is written in the way you wrote the others I will buy every single one of them no matter how long I have to wait for it 😀 😀 😀
    thank you 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Morgaine, for your lovely email. I loved Riley’s sense of humor and her willingness to take everything in stride (even if she thought she was the supporting character of a B-rated Scifi movie). I’m currently working on Tina and Viper’s story (yes, Riley and Vox are in it). Poor Viper has no idea what he is about to encounter! If you haven’t, please post a review! I would love for others know the stories are worth reading! Thank you again!!!

        • Not yet, LOL. I really need to find my list! I am planning on it being this year. I’m finishing up one story now and will be working hard, or hardly working since I love to write, on the others! 🙂

  • You know such a short excerpt could be classified as cruel and unusual punishment for all the bugging we your loyal fans give you LOL

  • When is Book 3 of the Sarafin Warriors: Heart of The Cat being released? I have just finished Book 2 of the series: Viper’s Defiant Mate, and completely loved it!!! Am “really” looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

    • LOL. I’ve promised readers Adalard’s book first. I’m working on several at the moment. I’m hoping to get caught up (don’t laugh! I believe in miracles!) and maybe a little ahead. Okay, now you can laugh. Still, I hope to be able to get to Heart of the Cat by early next year.

      • It’s now Feb. 2016 and I’m wondering if you might have a date for Heart Of The Cat? You said to Signi by early next year and Amazon doesn’t have any info on that nor goodreads either. I’d like to know when to look for this book! Thank you Admin for taking the time to hopefully respond!

        • Hi Heather. Thank you for writing. Yep, it is definitely February and I’m still trying to find out what happened to 2015! 🙂 I had a few delays due to life. I’ve had a talk with it and we are finally communicating again. I’m writing. Things are a little behind (as usual).

  • Hi! I’ve read so many of your books and I love them, especially the Valdier (both dragons and dragonlings) and Sarafin and Curizan! I was wondering if you’re going to write a book for Blaze later on? He was only mentioned in Paul’s Pursuit but I like him.

  • I’d just like to say, I’ve read all your books and to my surprise I really really enjoyed them all! However I’d just like to say the Choosing Riley is my absolute favourite!!! She’s classy and witty, shows so much spunk and a fabulous sense of humour! I LOVE HER! Thanks for the great reads!

    • Thank you so very much Naomi! I can’t tell you how much it means that you took the time to share this with me. I love Riley. She is definitely the perfect mate for Vox. I also appreciate her sense of humor and compassion. She is one of those rare heroines that kick’s butt without realizing she is doing it. She is a girly-girly with an enormous heart. Thank you again!

  • Hi, thank you so much for this book, I am still laughing. Riley and her family are nuts are you sure the Sarafin will survive meeting them lol. I love Riley’s Bag you just never know what she is going to pull out of it. Please keep up the good work I love reading your books but like I said Riley’s Choice has made me laugh so hard I almost had a little mishap LOL

  • Hiya! Love love love your books, I think I’ve got and reread multiple times, every one. One thing I’m wondering if we’ll ever see though… a real come to jesus showdown when it comes to the heroes’ mating instincts overriding the heroines’ having a choice in the matter. It’s always a case of that mating instinct coming first and really very little about understanding what huge thing that lack of choice for the heroines is. It just gets all accepted and forgiven in a flash because of the “mighty wonderdong of love” and/or “it’s twoo lurve anyway” factor, and the fact that it’s done and now they have to get used to it… but I’d still love to see a hero who really gets slapped upside the head (literally and figuratively) by what a huge thing it is to a human 1) to have to accept it because it’s already a done deal, or they’re the “bad guy” responsible for some alien bloke’s death if they don’t cater to his mating imperative, and 2) to have their whole being changed/transformed into something “other” with no forewarning or explanations in advance or in fact any choice in the matter. I’d so love to see a hero really “get” how huge that is, and truly appreciate it, other than just the whole “it’s part of me, so she’ll come round in the end coz she’s my mate and will love me in the end anyway”.

    • Hi Neeta. I’ve actually written all the things you are talking about in one story or another. In Jaguin’s Love, Jaguin understands and fights to give Sara time to decide. She is the one that comes to him and tells him she wants to try. I think in pretty much all of them, the guys have a wake up that this is up to the woman, that she needs to be the one to finally decide. In Paul’s Pursuit, it is Paul (human) chasing Morian (alien). In Krac’s Firebrand, Skeeter (heroine) is definitely the one doing the chasing. Sara knew about being transformed, just as Cara, Ariel, and Paul did. In my different series, there are different situations. Gracie definitely made the decision, so did Lacey in Magic, New Mexico. Argh! LOL. I would love to sit and talk about this over a meal. It would totally be easier and more interesting. I’ll be in Australia next year, so hopefully then! I hope this helps!

    • I’m running behind thanks to a broken arm, but I’m back in action! I have to write Adalard’s story first.

Did I miss Heart of the Cat?? I know you have started another series away from the dragons, cats and magic. But I’m missing them. Need more cats and magic in my day😀

    • Heart of the Cat will be out as a full length novel in the Pets in Space anthology on October 9th 2018.
