She caught him off balance. Her surprisingly strong arms and compact body lifted him partially off his feet as she tackled him. At the same time, the all too familiar sound of gunfire erupted from behind him. His arms reached out to cushion his and the woman’s fall, but she was already rolling over him and landing in a crouch with both hands pressed firmly against the polished floor and one leg stretched out as if she were about to do a flip.
“Run when I tell you,” she ordered, her violet eyes blazing with an unusually calm fire.
He conveyed his own experience and competence with a glance and noted that Tarek and the bodyguards had drawn and were firing. Tarek never missed.
“Qadir, this way,” Tarek said in an urgent voice.
Qadir rose to his feet in one fluid motion. The woman started away from him and he automatically captured an arm to keep her by his side. She frowned and tugged, trying to free herself.
“You got them. I’ve got to go,” she said.
The high-pitched sound of sirens told him that someone had already reported the incident. There would be media covering the building in minutes once it was known who was the target. The woman yanked her arm again, trying to break free with a new sense of urgency that made him frown. He stared down at her with a fierce expression.
“You’ll come with me,” he stated.

Nothing. She never showed up at LaClaire’s. Karam never received a call. It would appear your mystery lady has disappeared again.
Tarek didn’t add what he had been saying over and over to Qadir—that maybe it would be for the best to let this one slip through his fingers. He knew that Tarek was worried about the earlier attack and the role his mysterious woman had played in it. The two dead attackers had been street thugs. To date, Tarek couldn’t find a link from them to any of his known enemies.
What was even more perplexing was how the woman knew what was going to happen so quickly. Was she part of the plan? She had disappeared before Tarek or the police could interrogate her. That, coupled with the fact she had no paper trail in a time when everyone did, cast even further doubt on her innocence.

“I will call you once I have finished reading over the proposal,” he snapped.
“Well, since you said that so cheerfully, I might have to make you a more enticing offer,” Aimee teased.
He dropped his hand to his lap, swiveled in his chair, and rose, looking out over the cityscape. His hand tightened on his phone and he breathed a silent prayer of relief. She was out there somewhere.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
Her amused laughter sounded like music in his ear. “How about starting with ‘Hi, Aimee. I’m so glad you called. Did you have a lovely day? How about I meet you for dinner? I know you must be starving’,” she suggested.
His lips curved into a rueful smile. He knew she wouldn’t tell him where she was until he asked her more politely. Shaking his head, he closed his eyes and sighed.
“Hello, Aimee. I’m thrilled that you finally called me. I’m glad you did not kill yourself today. Where can I pick you up so I can take you to dinner?” he said.

“Qadir.”
He turned to face her. She was standing at the entrance to the living room with an expression of uncertainty on her face. She looked small and fragile in her tattered jeans and oversized t-shirt. He blinked and tilted his head to stare at her shirt.
“Is that a polka dotted chicken?” he asked.
She reached down and pulled the front of her shirt out to looked down at the chicken that looked like it had a case of rainbow-colored chickenpox. A wry smile curved her lips and she gazed back at him.
“It’s different,” she said.
He chuckled. “You didn’t cut your hair,” he observed.
She lifted the long, heavy damp strands. “It’s my superpower,” she softly replied.

The soft click of the door behind him signaled that he was alone with Aimee. He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, lifting her pale hand in his.
He traced the veins along her skin. His eyes ran up her arm, pausing on the IV port. She coughed in her sleep, struggling for a moment to catch her breath, before she settled with a soft sigh.
“Ah, habibi, what am I going to do with you?”
Her fingers flexed in his, squeezing them with the barest of pressure. It was probably wishful thinking, but at the moment, he would take any sign that she heard him. He rose to his feet, undressed, and after a quick shower, he pulled on a pair of jogging pants.
Leaving one of the lights in the bathroom on, he partially closed the door, turned off the bedside table lamp, and crawled into bed. He slid his arm around Aimee. She immediately turned onto her side with her back to him and scooted back. He cushioned her arm so she wouldn’t pull on the IV line.
“Qadir,” Aimee murmured.
“Yes, habibi.”
“I’m glad you came back,” she mumbled.
He kissed her shoulder. “So am I, habibi. So am I.”
