Teaser/Excerpt:

A caravan!

The thought hit her at the same time as the pole holding her shelter in place tilted, then collapsed, covering her with the material. She struggled to uncover her head, feeling like she was about to suffocate when it was pulled off of her. She blinked in the brilliant sunlight, her eyes watering as she tried to make out who had pulled off the cover.

The man stepped into the brilliant light, blocking it. She saw it was an old man. He said something that she didn’t understand. He repeated his request.

“Are you alright, boy?” the old man asked.

Katie stared up at him with a blank expression. She opened her mouth to respond before she realized the moment she said anything, the man would know she was a girl. Staring up at him, she signed that she needed help.

The man stared at her with a frown. “Can’t you speak?” the man demanded.

Katie shook her head.
